CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple unveiled iOS 18 today, a significant update featuring enhanced customization options, the most extensive redesign of the Photos app to date, innovative inbox management in Mail, and the capability to send Messages via satellite, among other enhancements. Users can now freely arrange apps and widgets on the Home Screen, customize the Lock Screen buttons, and access additional controls in the Control Center. Photos will now automatically organize libraries into a new single view with convenient collections for easy access to favorites. Mail will streamline inbox management by categorizing emails using on-device intelligence, and iMessage will offer new text effects. Utilizing the same advanced technology as existing iPhone satellite features, users will be able to send messages via satellite when cellular or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable.

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines generative models with personal context to provide highly useful and relevant intelligence. Designed with privacy at its core, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It leverages Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images, perform tasks across apps, and use personal context to simplify everyday activities.

“We are excited to launch iOS 18. This is a major release packed with amazing features, including enhanced customization, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful new ways to stay connected via Messages. There's something for everyone to benefit from,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “This release also signifies the start of an exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence, offering intuitive, powerful, and immediately useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all while prioritizing privacy. We can't wait for users to try it out.”

Advanced Customization and Enhanced Capabilities

iPhone users are now equipped with sophisticated options to tailor the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center to their precise preferences. Apps and widgets can be positioned in any available space on the Home Screen, including strategically placing them above the dock for immediate access or artfully framing a wallpaper. App icons and widgets can now feature a dark or tinted effect and can be resized to create a user interface that meets individual needs. The redesigned Control Center has been optimized for more efficient access to daily functions, offering unprecedented levels of customization and adaptability. This includes streamlined access to commonly used controls such as media playback, Home automation, and connectivity, with the ability to effortlessly navigate between them.

Users can also integrate controls from third-party applications into the Control Center, enabling quick actions such as unlocking a vehicle or capturing social media content seamlessly from a centralized hub. The comprehensive controls gallery displays all available options, allowing users to personalize the layout and size of controls, and even create entirely new groups. For the first time, the Lock Screen controls can be modified, allowing users to select from a variety of options within the controls gallery or remove them entirely to suit their preferences. Additionally, the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max facilitates instant access to the gallery's controls, enhancing user efficiency and interaction with their device.

Photos Gets a Unified View, New Collections, and Customization

The Photos app undergoes its most significant redesign yet, making it easier for users to find and revisit special moments. A streamlined single view now showcases a familiar grid layout, while new collections allow users to browse by themes without manually organizing content into albums. Users can also pin collections to keep their favorites readily accessible. The new carousel view highlights daily updates featuring favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app animates the library, letting users enjoy past moments while browsing. Recognizing the uniqueness of each user's photo library, the app is customizable, allowing users to organize collections, pin frequently accessed ones, and feature their most important moments in the carousel view.

Powerful Ways to Stay Connected in Messages

iMessage introduces dynamic new text effects that enliven conversations by animating any letter, word, phrase, or emoji. Users can enhance their expressions with formatting options such as bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks now support any emoji or sticker, and users can also compose messages and schedule them to be sent at a later time, providing greater flexibility and expression in their communication.

Enhanced Communication Features in Messages

iMessage now boasts fresh text effects that inject vibrancy into conversations, animating every letter, word, phrase, or emoji with dynamic flair. Users can convey nuanced tones by incorporating formatting options like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks have been expanded to encompass any emoji or sticker, and users can now draft messages and schedule them for later sending. Additionally, when communicating with contacts lacking Apple devices, the Messages app now supports RCS, offering richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to traditional SMS and MMS.

iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite, providing a solution for scenarios where cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. Leveraging the same pioneering technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via satellite seamlessly guides users to connect to the nearest satellite directly from the Messages app. This enables the sending and receiving of texts, emojis, and Tapbacks via iMessage and SMS. With the innovative Dynamic Island feature, users can easily discern when they are connected to a satellite. Notably, iMessages sent via satellite benefit from end-to-end encryption, underscoring Apple's commitment to user privacy.

Mail Improvements

In the upcoming update, Mail will unveil fresh features to streamline inbox management and ensure users stay informed. Utilizing on-device categorization, incoming emails will be automatically sorted into distinct folders: Primary for personal and time-sensitive messages, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Additionally, Mail will introduce a new digest view consolidating pertinent emails from a business, enabling users to swiftly identify crucial information at a glance.

Major Safari Enhancements

Safari, renowned as the world's fastest browser, now provides a more intuitive approach to exploring online content with the introduction of Highlights and an overhauled Reader experience. Leveraging machine learning capabilities, Safari can now extract key details from webpages. For instance, users can access a summary to grasp the essence of an article, swiftly locate the address of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark, or listen to a track by an artist directly from an article discussing the song or album. The redesigned Reader feature offers additional ways to immerse oneself in articles without distractions, incorporating a summary and table of contents for lengthier reads.

Introducing the Passwords App

Expanding upon the longstanding Keychain framework established over 25 years ago, the new Passwords app simplifies access to users' passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi credentials, and verification codes. Additionally, the app provides alerts to users regarding potential vulnerabilities, such as easily guessed or reused passwords, as well as those found in known data breaches.

New Privacy Features Empowering Users

iOS 18 introduces enhanced controls to empower users in managing app visibility, contact sharing, and device connectivity. Locked and hidden apps provide users with assurance that confidential information, such as app notifications and content, remains private and inaccessible to unintended viewers. Users can now lock an app for added security or hide it in a designated folder for further privacy. When an app is locked or hidden, its contents, such as messages or emails, are concealed from search results, notifications, and other system areas. Additionally, iOS 18 offers users the flexibility to selectively share specific contacts with apps, granting greater control over personal data access. Moreover, developers can seamlessly connect third-party accessories to iPhone while ensuring that apps do not gain access to other devices on the user's network, preserving device privacy and facilitating seamless pairing.

Revolutionizing the iPhone Experience with Apple Intelligence

Integrated deeply into iOS 18 and prioritizing privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence introduces innovative ways for users to elevate their writing skills and enhance communication. The introduction of new systemwide Writing Tools within iOS 18 enables users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various platforms, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. Moreover, new image capabilities add a layer of fun and creativity to communication. With Image Playground, users can effortlessly create playful images in seconds, choosing from three distinct styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This feature is seamlessly integrated into apps like Messages and also available as a standalone app. Memories in Photos empowers users to craft personalized stories simply by typing a description. Leveraging Apple Intelligence, Memories selects the best photos and videos based on the description, creates a storyline with themed chapters, and arranges them into a cohesive narrative movie. Additionally, a new Clean Up tool identifies and removes distracting background objects in photos while preserving the subject. Siri also undergoes significant enhancements with Apple Intelligence, becoming more natural, contextually relevant, and personalized. Users can now interact with Siri through typing, seamlessly switching between text and voice communication based on preference. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new benchmark for privacy in AI by offering flexible computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models running on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When utilizing Private Cloud Compute, user data is not stored or accessed by Apple, ensuring privacy and security. Moreover, ChatGPT integration into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple's platforms enables users to leverage its expertise, image understanding, and document capabilities seamlessly.
