Donald Sutherland passed away at the age of 88 in Miami after a long illness. His son, Kiefer Sutherland, wrote, "He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that," on social media. Sutherland, who starred in over 200 movies and TV shows, was a mainstay in American cinema for seven decades and received an honorary Oscar in 2017, despite never being nominated for one.

The Canadian actor initially gained attention playing American soldiers, notably in the 1967 film "The Dirty Dozen." His performance led to roles in "MAS*H" (1970) and "Kelly's Heroes" (1970). Despite frequently portraying soldiers, Sutherland was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and participated in anti-war activities alongside Jane Fonda, which included a traveling roadshow and a documentary, "F.T.A."

Sutherland's political activism did not hinder his career. He played leading roles in films such as "Klute," "The Day of the Locust," "Ordinary People," and "Don't Look Now." He was well-known for his portrayal of unconventional authority figures, including his role as President Snow in "The Hunger Games" franchise, which earned him praise from co-star Jennifer Lawrence.
